Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It commonly occurs when the nerve is irritated or compressed, often due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscle tightness in the lower back or pelvis. Sciatica can vary from mild discomfort to sharp, burning pain that significantly affects mobility.

Symptoms typically include pain radiating from the lower back into one leg, along with numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness. The pain may worsen with sitting, standing for long periods, or sudden movements. Many cases improve over time with conservative treatment such as gentle movement, stretching, physical therapy, and pain relief.

Understanding the underlying cause of sciatica is important for effective management and prevention. Persistent pain, worsening symptoms, or changes in bladder or bowel control require prompt medical assessment. This section explores common causes of sciatica, symptoms to watch for, treatment options, and when professional care is necessary.
